Sri Lanka took on Bangladesh in the fifth match of the Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. Sri Lanka held their nerves to win a nail-biting contest and seal a berth in the super four stage of the competition.

The Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and asked Bangladesh to bat first. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, opening for Bangladesh, got them off to a flying start. He took on the Lankan bowlers from the word go and scored at a brisk rate.

Sri Lanka fought back in the contest by picking wickets in the middle phase. Afif Hossain along with Mahmudullah put up a solid partnership and on the back of it and Mossadek’s cameo in the end powered them to 183/7 at the end of their 20 overs.

Sri Lanka had a good start to the chase, thanks to Kusal Mendis who took on the bowling from the word go. They scored 48 at the end of the powerplay for the loss of one wicket. Debutant Ebadot Hossain brought his side back in the game by picking three wickets.

Mendis was going strong from one end and he brought up his fifty. He departed on 60 in the 15th over. Dasun Shanaka played a good knock of 45 off 33 balls to help his side get closer to the target and the lower order batters held their nerves to chase down the total with four balls to spare. Ebadot and Taskin Ahmed picked up three and two wickets respectively for Bangladesh but they failed to defend the total.

Sri Lanka knock Bangladesh out of the Asia Cup 2022

It was a close-fought contest. There were plenty of ebbs and flows throughout the game and it was a virtual knockout fixture as the winner would get qualified for the super four stage of the Asia Cup. Bangladesh did a fine job to post 183 on the board but the bowlers put in a disappointing performance as they failed to defend the total.

With this win, Sri Lanka knock Bangladesh out of the Asia Cup 2022. Sri Lanka join Afghanistan and India and the fourth team will be decided on Friday when Pakistan take on Hong Kong. Bangladesh will rue the small mistakes they committed during the match that cost them the game.

Player of the Match

Kusal Mendis was adjudged the player of the match for his brilliant knock of 60 off 37 balls.

First six overs, I went with my normal game and then the next four overs, I went with my shots. I got to 60 runs and did the best for my team. I have had practice in Sri Lanka for the last six months to a year, everyday I am learning and I know what the team wants from me.

– Kusal Mendis

At the middle period, I thought it was tough. But when myself and Kusal were batting, I thought it was achievable. I think the openers did a good job, we discussed that we needed that opening partnership for the start.

– Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka Skipper
