Hong Kong qualified for the Asia Cup for the fourth time; Read to face against India and Pakistan

Hong Kong qualified: Hong Kong created history on Wednesday as they qualified for the Asia Cup for the fourth time. The team will now be competing against the likes of India and Pakistan in the marquee T20 Event. Hong Kong joins India and Pakistan in Group A while Group B also has three teams, including the likes of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

Asia Cup 2022 – Hong Kong Qualified

Asia Cup 2022 is scheduled to be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from August 27 to September 11. The curtain-raiser will be conducted between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in Dubai. Notably, Hong Kong previously qualified for the tournament in 2004, 2008, and 2018. In the 2004 season, the team ended up at the bottom of Group A after losing both their league matches.

A glance at Hong Kong’s journey in the Qualifiers

Their condition was no better in the next two appearances as well as they failed to secure a single victory. Hong Kong will now be hoping for a change of fortunes in 2022 as they have grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years.

The Nizakat Khan-led side was absolutely ferocious during the Asia Cup Qualifier 2022. They won all three league games to finish at the top of the table. The team’s first victory came against Singapore by eight runs. KD Shah was the top run-scorer with a knock of 34 runs as Kong Kong registered a score of 148 runs while batting first.

Chasing the total, Singapore were restricted to a score of 140 runs as Ehsan Khan picked three wickets each. In Hong Kong’s second game, they got better off Kuwait by eight wickets. Playing against Mohammed Aslam & Men, Hong Kong easily chased the target of 152 runs within 17.4 overs. 

They defeated the UAE in their last match

Babar Hayat was the wrecker-in-chief for the team with a splendid knock of not out 53 runs. Nizakat Khan, who smashed 50 runs off 43 balls aptly supported him. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s last and final victory came against the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

It was a comprehensive performance by the side as they scored a win by eight wickets. Put to bat first, UAE succumbed to pressure. Despite a good performance by Chundangapoyli Rizwan and Zawar Farid, the team ended up with only 147 runs in their allotted 20 overs. 

For Hong Kong, Ehsan Khan led the bowling unit as he picked a stunning four wickets at an economy rate of six. Ayush Shukla and Aizaz Khan also delivered brilliant performances as they scalped three and two wickets, respectively. Chasing the score, Hong Kong had a sensational start to their batting innings.

The opening duo of skipper and Yasim Murtaza lit up the team’s dugout. They stitched a crucial partnership of 85 runs in the middle. Though Nizakat departed at a score of 39, Yasim continued his exploits and ended up with a fifty. Meanwhile, Hayat applied the finishing touches as his knock of 38 runs took the team home in 19 overs.
