All-round Performance Helps Jamaica Tallawahs
The 19th match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2022 saw Jamaica Tallawahs beat Barbados Royals at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain in Trinidad. This was the first loss of the Royals in this year’s competition.
Jamaica Tallawahs skipper Rovman Powell won the toss and had no hesitation in bowling first. Their bowlers delivered as they bowled beautifully upfront and reduced the Royals to 17/3 at the end of the powerplay. Quinton de Kock along with Azam Khan tried to resurrect the innings but the latter was dismissed on 12.
The South African duo of de Kock and David Miller started building a partnership. Both looked solid, with de Kock bringing up his fifty. The 83-run stand between them helped them get to a respectable total. de Kock and Miller scored 74 and 34 respectively as they finished their innings on 146/6. Imad Wasim spun through the Royals’ batting lineup as he picked up three wickets, giving away only 14 runs in his three overs, which included two maidens. This is the second time, Imad Wasim has adjourned as Player of the match in CPL22.
The Tallawahs had a fantastic start to the chase, thanks to their openers in Brandon King and Amir Jangoo. Both put up 50 between them in no time but Jangoo played one shot too many as he departed on 29. It helped them score 59 at the end of the powerplay which laid a solid foundation to chase this tricky total.
King looked solid at the other end. He was looking good but Jason Holder cleaned him up three short of his half-century. There was a mini-collapse in the middle overs and it helped the Royals get back in the contest. The game went down to the wire and Powell hit a six in the 17th over which proved to be the deciding factor at the end of the match. Rain arrived at the end of the 17 overs and no play was possible after that. The Tallawahs were ahead by six runs on the DLS method and they were declared the winners.
Barbados Royals suffer their first loss of the CPL 2022
Barbados Royals were on a roll coming into this game. They had played six games in the competition and won all. Their batters struggled and crawled their way to 146 at the end of their 20 overs. The bowlers tried hard but they would think that the rain played a spoilsport as they suffered a loss in a close-fought contest.
Jamaica Tallawahs, on the other hand, registered their fourth win of the CPL 2022. They defeated the table-toppers Royals in a close-fought contest and have grabbed two crucial points to take their tally to eight. They will look to carry forward the winning momentum in their upcoming games of the CPL 2022.
Player of the Match (POTM)
Imad Wasim was named the Player of the Match for his outstanding bowling. He finished with figures of 3-2-14-3.
