The Kings were asked to bat first and their skipper Faf du Plessis got them off to a sensational start. He played some wonderful strokes and scored 41 off just 21 balls before getting dismissed in the fifth over. The 48-run opening stand comprised of du Plessis’ 41 alone. Niroshan Dickwella arrived at the crease but it was a short stay for him as he departed on the last ball of the powerplay, with the scoreboard reading 60/2.

The Kings kept losing wickets at regular intervals but Johnson Charles stood tall against the Patriots. He brought up his fifty and played a well-compiled innings of 61 before falling in the 16th over. His innings laid a solid foundation as cameos from David Wiese (21* off 12 balls) and Roshon Primus (18 off 10 balls) powered them to 189/7. Rashid Khan, Dwaine Pretorius, and Dwayne Bravo picked up two wickets apiece for the Patriots.

The Patriots had a steady start to their chase. Andre Fletcher and Evin Lewis were looking good but both departed in the fifth over. It dented their progress a bit. Dewald Brevis along with Darren Bravo led the fightback but the latter fell on 19. It created an opening for the Kings and Wiese picked up three wickets in quick succession.

Brevis fought hard for his 32 and Rashid Khan looked good for his 26 but there were no significant contributions from the other batters as they were eventually bundled out on 140, losing the game by 49 runs. Wiese and Kesrick Williams picked up three wickets each. Roshon Primus also grabbed two scalps as they completed a comprehensive win over the defending champions.

Player of the Match

David Wiese grabbed Player of the Match award for his all-round efforts.

I thought we did well in the powerplay with the bat. It just allows us to come at the end, bash a few and push towards the competitive score. The wicket was getting slower, so it’s just about using the variations.

– David Wiese

On a wicket like this, you got to get ahead in the game as it slows down after the powerplay. It was brilliant from Wiese. If everyone is playing their role well, makes it that much more easier for the skipper.

– Faf du Plessis, Saint Lucia Kings Skipper
