CPL 2022: Charles, Chase star for the Kings in a nerve-racking win over the Knight Riders

Trinbago Knight Riders faced Saint Lucia Kings in the 23rd match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2022. It was the last fixture in Trinidad at Brian Lara Stadium where the hosts suffered a loss in front of their home crowd. Charles, Chase become star for the Kings!
The Saint Lucia Kings were put in to bat by Knight Riders skipper Kieron Pollard. The Kings lost their skipper Faf du Plessis early in the innings. Johnson Charles continued his rich form with the bat and led started building a partnership along with Niroshan Dickwella. The 59-run stand came to an end in the 10th over when the southpaw was dismissed on 21. Charles was going strong from one end and he brought up yet another fifty in this year’s CPL.
Charles’ knock of 54 came to an end when Ravi Rampaul cleaned him up in the 12th over. His innings laid a solid foundation for the Kings to finish with a flourish. Late assault from David Wiese (33 off 14 balls) helped them post 147 on the board, which has been competitive at this venue. Sunil Narine and Ravi Rampaul picked up two wickets each for the Knight Riders.
Tim Seifert was promoted up the order for the Knight Riders and he delivered. However, he lacked support from the other end as Roston Chase blew away to the top-order in the powerplay as the Knight Riders were 45/3 at the end of it. Pollard joined Seifert and tried to resurrect the innings. Both put 54 between them before Pollard fell on 34.
Seifert kept the Knight Riders in the chase but departed at the wrong time in the 16th over on run-a-ball 44. Andre Russell and Sunil Narine swung their bat and hit some lusty blows in the end. The game went down to the wire and with 22 required from the last over, Roshon Primus held his nerves to concede 20 and help his side win the game by a solitary run. Chase picked up three wickets for the Kings and Alzarri Joseph finished with two as the Kings successfully defended the total.
Trinbago Knight Riders finish their home leg of the CPL 2022 with a loss
Trinbago Knight Riders have now played eight games so far. They have lost four of those and have seven points to their name. They are placed fourth in the points table and need to get to the drawing board quickly to not repeat their mistakes in their next game. The Knight Riders finish the home leg with a loss and will look to get back to winning ways in their next fixture of the CPL 2022 against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
Saint Lucia Kings with this close-fought win over the Knight Riders have jumped to the second spot. They have now won four games and lost as many and look in a good position to qualify for the playoffs of the CPL 2022. They held their nerves against the Knight Riders and will gain a lot of confidence after the win.
Player of the Match
Roston Chase was adjudged the Player of the Match for his bowling figures of 3/17. Charlse and Chase star for the Kings tonight.
We didn’t get the best start, the guys really caught some momentum. I tried to put the ball in the right areas. The wicket was gripping a bit and it worked for me.
– Roston Chase
Great game of cricket. That last over, the last two sixes but the message was ‘stay behind the line and don’t bowl a wide.’ Wet ball, I wasn’t backing bowling yorkers to Dre Russ. When players go through purple patch, you have make it count and that’s what he’s doing.
– Faf du Plessis, Saint Lucia Kings Skipper
