Viewers Rating 5/5 - (5 Votes)

The final of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2022 saw Barbados Royals lock horns against Jamaica Tallwahs at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. A solid all-round performance saw the Tallawahs beat the Royals comprehensively to lift their third title. Fabian Allen, Brandon King step up to help Jamaica Tallawahs lift their third Title CPL 2022.

Barbados Royals skipper Kyle Mayers won the toss and opted to bat first. They got off to a flying start, thanks to Rahkeem Cornwall and Mayers. Both took on the bowling from the word go and scored 63 at the end of the powerplay. Cornwall was dismissed on the last ball of the powerplay on 21-ball 36. Mayers looked good for his 29 but fell in the eighth over.

Azam Khan, batting at three, played beautifully and held the innings nicely for the Royals. He was going nicely but lacked support from the other end. None of the other batters contributed with the bat as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Khan brought up his fifty but departed soon in the penultimate over. As a result, the Royals only managed to post 161 at the end of their 20 overs. The Tallwahs picked up seven wickets in total, with Fabian Allen and Nicholson Gordon finishing with three apiece.

It was a competitive total to be chased down in the final. The Tallawahs got off to a shaky start, losing Kennar Lewis on a golden duck in the second over. Shamarh Brooks joined hands with Brandon King and led the recovery work. Both took some time to settle in as they managed to score 41 at the end of the fielding restrictions. Once both batters got their eye in, they started playing their strokes freely.

Brooks carried forward his rich form with the bat and played some wonderful strokes. He fell three short of his half-century in the 11th over. King stepped up after Brooks’ dismissal and didn’t allow the Royals to get back in the contest. He brought up his fifty and kept the required run rate under control. King and Powell put 75 between them for the third wicket as both remained unbeaten on 83 and 14 to help their side chase down the total in 16.1 overs. Fittingly, King finished off things with a six as the Tallawahs clinched their third CPL title.

Barbados Royals fail to close out as they finish as the runners-up in the CPL 2022

Barbados Royals were the hot favorites coming into the final. They qualified to the playoffs on the back of eight wins in 10 games. They beat Guyana Amazon Warriors comprehensively in the first qualifier to seal a berth in the final. The Royals failed to fire in unison on the big day as they came second to the Jamaica Tallawahs and as a result finish as runners-up. It just wasn’t their day with both bat and ball and they will have to wait one more year to lift the title.

Jamaica Tallwahs, on the other hand, were the underdogs. They finished the league stages at the fourth position. They beat Saint Lucia Kings in the eliminator and the Warriors in the second qualifier. The Tallawahs made sure that they carry forward the winning momentum and come out on top against the Royals in the final to lift the title. They were the champions in 2016 and after a topsy-turvy season, they are crowned the champions of the CPL 2022.

Player of the Match

Fabian Allen was named the Player of the Match for his excellent bowling figures of 3/24.

I dedicate this win to my father who passed away. The skipper came to me and told me that I had to play a big role. I just executed it. We had a meeting that if we batted well till the tenth over, we could win this.

– Fabian Allen, Player of the Match

Brandon King grabbed the Player of the Series award for scoring 422 runs in 13 matches.

Obviously, I set goals for myself before the tournament. One was to win the trophy and then to end up as the highest run-scorer too was amazing. I was match ready. Brooks played a fantastic innings at the start, he kept us going towards the score.

– Brandon King, Player of the Series

Words won’t be adequete to describe what I feel. The emotions that I had will come out now. The back-room staff played their part. Special mention to my 16-17 players. I formed a leadership group and were an integral part in pushing the team. Our overseas players deserve mention too. At one stage it felt like we were out, but now we are CPL champions.

– Rovman Powell, Jamaica Tallawahs Skipper
