ICC Apologizes to Australia for India – Why?

Australia, who are touring India, are playing the 4-match Border-Gavaskar Cup Test cricket series. Having already secured a place in the Test Championship finals in London in July, the team went into the final two series with the setup to beat India, who beat them at home for the first time in their history, this time on their soil for the first time since 2004. But the team, who made unnecessary criticisms about the pitch in the beginning, did not show much of what they talked about and suffered an innings defeat in the first match in Nagpur.

So the humiliated team is forced to perform well in the 2nd match in Delhi and prove that they are the number one team in the world by replying to India. But before that, yesterday, February 15th, at 3 pm yesterday, Australia lost the number one position and India became the new number one Test team in the world, the rankings were updated on the official website of ICC. Especially due to the defeat of the innings, the leading points held by Australia shifted to India and became number one.

So, India, which is already the number one team in ODI and T20 cricket, made a historic record of becoming the first Asian team to simultaneously top the ICC rankings in all three categories of international cricket – Test, ODI and T20. India also equaled South Africa’s world record of being number one in three ICC rankings at the same time. So as usual, the news spread across all media and Indian fans celebrated India’s world record.

But again at 6 pm Australia was on top with 126 points and India on 2nd place with 115 points which confused the Indian fans when the same ICC showed on the internet. However, the ICC has made it clear that this was due to a technical glitch and apologized to Australia for this mistake. A press release issued by the ICC said as follows.

“The ICC acknowledges that due to a technical glitch on February 15, 2023, India was wrongly displayed as the number one Test team on the ICC Internet. We apologize for the inconvenience and confusion this has caused.” As a result, the Indian fans were disappointed, and the Australian fans were a little relieved. However, even if they escape this time, they are likely to regain the top spot if India wins the next match in Delhi.

Especially if they win the 3rd match in Indore, even the ICC cannot stop India from becoming the number one Test team in the world. So Australia may have escaped now but Indian fans are confident that India will be the number one Test team in the world when the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series ends. Following this, the players from both the teams are engaged in intense net training in order to win the 2nd Test match to be held in the capital Delhi on 17th February.
