In a thrilling encounter between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens on April 26, Shashank Singh explosive batting performance stole the show, earning him praise from his captain Sam Curran, who called him the “find of the season”.

Singh, who was promoted to No. 4, played a match-winning innings, remaining unbeaten on 68 runs off just 28 balls. His blitzkrieg included eight towering sixes, showcasing his clean hitting and contributing significantly to his team’s total score.

Speaking during the post-match presentation, stand-in captain Sam Curran was full of praise for Singh, saying, “Shashank, wow, he was promoted to No. 4 and he’s been our find of the season. We’ve to enjoy the small wins, although this was a big win coming to Kolkata.”

Jonny Bairstow, who was announced the Player of the Match, also commended Singh for his exceptional performance. “Shashank has done it all season, a lovely guy and special player. To have someone like him coming in and do that is unbelievable. His knowledge, he’s not young either, he is nice and calm, full credit to him the way he came out and hit it cleanly,” Bairstow said.

Singh innings was crucial in propelling Punjab Kings to a mammoth total of 263 runs, with a staggering 24 sixes being hit by the team in just 18.4 overs. Singh contribution with the bat this season has been phenomenal, amassing 263 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 182 and an average of 65.

However, Singh journey to the Punjab Kings squad was rather unconventional. He was ‘accidentally’ bought by Preity Zinta franchise during the IPL Mini Auction in December 2023, with the team mistaking him for another player. Despite realizing the mistake, PBKS were unable to reverse the decision.

Reflecting on the team exceptional performance, Sam Curran expressed his delight at the win, saying, “Very pleasing. Most importantly the win, cricket has turned to base ball isn’t it? We’re delighted with the two points. We had a tough few weeks as a team. Forget about the scores, we deserved this victory.”

Commenting on the high-scoring trend in this year IPL, Curran attributed it to various factors including improved batting skills, coaching, training, dew factor, and rule changes. Stats are going out of the window. For us, it’s all about the small moments. With the ball also we hung in there,” Curran added.

With Shashank Singh explosive batting form and Punjab Kings resurgence, the team will look to carry forward the momentum in the remainder of the tournament.
