In a thrilling encounter at the Eden Gardens Cricket Ground, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured a convincing 7-wicket victory against Delhi Capitals in the 47th league match of the ongoing IPL 2024 T20 cricket series.

Batting first, Delhi Capitals managed to put up a modest total of 153/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite the efforts of Kuldeep Yadav, who top-scored with an unbeaten 35 runs, and Axar Patel, who took 2 crucial wickets for Delhi, they struggled to post a challenging target. Key players like Rishabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw failed to make significant contributions with the bat. Varun Chakravarthy was the pick of the bowlers for Kolkata, claiming 3 important wickets.

Chasing a target of 154 runs for victory, Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a flying start, largely thanks to the heroics of Phil Salt. The England opener smashed a brilliant 68 runs, while captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 33, guiding Kolkata to victory with 21 balls to spare. Despite Axar Patel’s efforts with the ball for Delhi, picking up 2 wickets, they couldn’t prevent Kolkata from clinching the win.

With this win, Kolkata Knight Riders moved up to the 2nd position in the points table, having secured their 6th victory in 9 matches. Their chances of making it to the playoffs have significantly improved. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals suffered a setback in their quest for a playoff spot, registering their 6th defeat in 11 matches.

A notable highlight of the match was Phil Salt exceptional performance. Despite being initially unsold in the IPL 2024 player auction, Salt was eventually bought by Kolkata Knight Riders at his base price. Since then, he has been instrumental in the team’s success, amassing an impressive 392 runs in just 9 matches at a staggering strike rate of 180.65.

Salt remarkable performance at his hometown Eden Gardens has been particularly outstanding. He has scored 344 runs in 6 matches at the venue, breaking Sourav Ganguly record of the highest run-scorer in an IPL series at Eden Gardens. Ganguly previously held the record, having scored 331 runs in 7 innings for Kolkata in the 2010 season.

In addition to this feat, Salt also set a new record for the most runs scored in the Powerplay for the Kolkata team in an IPL match. His blistering innings saw him score 60 runs in the first 6 overs, surpassing Sunil Narine previous record of 54 runs, set in a match against Bengaluru in the 2017 season.

Salt exceptional form and record-breaking performances have undoubtedly been a major boost for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024 season, solidifying his place as one of the standout players of the tournament.
