Dane Van Niekerk’s absence is going to hurt the Proteas in the tri series

5/5 - (18 votes)

Another series and another absence for the white ball skipper of the Proteas Women- Dane van Niekerk.

In or out?

And the answer is usually out, unfortunate that it may be.

This is precisely what seems to be the case, especially where the last two cricketing seasons pertaining to ace spinner Dane van Niekerk are concerned.

Confirmed news reports from South Africa have a somber development that would definitely affect the morale of Dane van Niekerk’s South African side.

The ace leg spinner, due to take part in the Tri nation white ball series also featuring the West Indies and India, is out.

Though make no mistake; this isn’t a once in a rare moon sort of absence for the right arm spinner.

For someone who didn’t experience the supreme joy of seeing her Proteas women make it to the semi final of the 2022-bound Women’s ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand having sat out of the tournament owing to an injury, Dane Van Niekerk’s further absence from the series featuring Windies and India will cut a sorry figure.

While Van Niekerk’s absence is surely going to benefit some of the strongest competitors her Proteas women are going to lock horns against, think the likes of Hayley Matthews, Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur, the all rounder’s absence has elicited a response from the selection committee’s end.

“Dane has progressed very well and it’s a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, she did not meet the minimum national standards and therefore is ineligible for selection and we will continue working on her fitness as we continue through the tri-series, to assess her eligibility for the [T20] World Cup,” sharedMr. Clinton Du Preez, who happens to be the conveyor of selectors.

But he would also add the following in the context of the absence of the celebrated leg spinning all-rounder, widely recognised as amongst the finest competitors in contemporary Women’s game: The uncapped players included have been part of the recent camps and have grown immensely. Annerie as an allrounder, she will bring much depth to the squad and versatility within the team. Tebogo has been working hard and will add an additional option as a wicketkeeper and it’s great for them to be a part of it.”

Fundamentally speaking, Dane Van Niekerk’s absence from the soon-to-begin three nation white ball series also leaves aggrieved fans having to deal with a sight where some of South Africa’s strongest talents are missing in the line up.

Forget not that the current side already lacks the world class services of two of the finest to have ever wielded the bat for a country warmly described as the “Rainbow Nation.”

With the retirement of Lizelle Lee and then, the subsequent retirement of Mignon du Preez, such a legend of the game, the Protea batting line up is as it is devoid of some of the most profoundest and impactful run makers that featured in its ranks.

Van Niekerk, no slouch with the bat herself is known for her famous adaptability in what’s usually a batting line up known for its depth.

The experienced campaigner who began as a teenager can both open as well as come down the lower order to put a good whack on the cricket ball.

At a time where one had the possibility of seeing some of the finest willow wielders in the current annals of the Women’s game go head-to-head against each other, the intrepid cricket fan is left bereft of the possibility of seeing several contests, such as a Mandhana vs Van Niekerk or Harmanpreet against Dane Van Niekerk show!

Surely, familiar all rounders in the bright green line up that fear no one whether Sune Luus, Chloe Tryon or Van Niekerk’s own partner Marizanne Kapp will miss the services of the ebullient performer who epitomises the sentiment: Never Say Die.

Come back stronger, Dane!
