Galle Gladiators beat Colombo Stars: Galle Gladiators registered their first victory of the ongoing third edition of the Lanka Premier League. They defeated Colombo Stars by 25 runs. After scoring 174/6 in 20 overs, they restricted Stars to 149/7. The match was played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele on Sunday.

With this victory, Gladiators moved up to the third spot in the points table.

First Innings

Gladiators won the toss and opted to bat first. Thanuka Dabare and Kusal Mendis put up a solid start adding 75 runs for the first wicket. Mendis got out for 39 on Ravi Bopara’s delivery. Dabare scored 36 runs off 27 balls. Udana came to the crease and stayed till the end. He quickfired unbeaten 45 runs in 30 balls with the help of 5 fours and 1 six. Fernando also contributed 29 runs in 16 balls. Azam Khan (8 runs), Iftikar Ahmed (2 runs) and Imad Wasim (6 runs) fell cheaply. Colombo used 8 bowlers- Vandersay picked 2 wickets and Bopara, Naveen, Drakes and Navod shared one wicket each.

Second Innings

Chasing 175, Colombo got off a rough start with Angelo Mathews getting dismissed to Thushara for just 9 runs. 8 balls later, Wahab Riaz sent Karim Janat back for a duck. Niroshan Dickwella stood tall at one end, but wickets kept falling from the other end. Iftikar Ahmed dismissed Navod and Asalanka in his two consecutive overs leaving Colombo Stars 47/4. Dickwella and Bopara added 78 runs for the fifth wicket but Pradeep dismissed Bopara for 46 in 35 balls. He then dismissed Chandimal for 16 runs. They could only manage to score 149 runs in 20 overs for the loss of 7 wickets. Dickwella remained unbeaten at 58.

Man of the match– Lahiru Udana won the man of the match award for his brilliant innings of unbeaten 45 runs in 30 balls.
