Jonny Bairstow has been ruled out of England’s third Test and T20 World Cup against South Africa after suffering a golfing injury.

The ECB said in a statement that Bairstow suffered a “lower limb injury”, understood to be in his left leg, and that he would see a specialist next week to “determine the full extent”.

Jonny Bairstow Ruled out of T20 World Cup is the trending topic on social media and breaking news across sports and News Channel.

Bairstow was injured while walking to the tee box while playing golf at Bunnell Golf Club near Harrogate on Friday morning. The injury is serious and believed to be a broken bone, which will rule Bairstow out of England’s Test tour of Pakistan in December.

“Unfortunately I am going to be unavailable of [sic] games/tours in the immediate future,” Bairstow wrote in a post on his Instagram story. “The reason being is that I have injured my lower leg in a freak accident and it shall need an operation.

Bairstow’s injury is a huge blow for England. He is the highest run-scorer in Test cricket across the test playing nation this year and he is the oldest player in their white-ball teams for England. The timing of his injury is scary for England, as it happened on the morning they revealed their T20 World Cup squad.
