The Hundred Men’s 2022, Match 16 Review: Sean Abbott stars in Manchester Originals’ clinical win over Welsh Fire

Manchester Originals defeated Welsh Fire convincingly to register their first win of the second edition of the Hundred.
Manchester Originals’ Clinical Win: Manchester Originals locked horns against Welsh Fire in the 16th match of the Men’s Hundred 2022. The Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester hosted this exciting contest.
Welsh Fire skipper Josh Cobb won the toss and asked the Originals to bat first. The Originals got off to a fantastic start, thanks to their opening pair of Jos Buttler and Philip Salt. They played some beautiful shots and put 66 between them before Adam Zampa dismissed Salt on 38. Fire pulled back things with this wicket.
Buttler was going strong from one end but was cleaned up by Zampa on 29. The Originals lost their way after Buttler’s departure as none of the other batters got going. Russell hit some lusty blows but they lost wickets in heap as they only managed to score 149 at the end of their full quota of 100 balls. Jake Ball starred with the ball for Fire, finishing with four wickets. Zampa and Dwaine Pretorius also chipped in with a couple of scalps each.
Chasing 150, Fire got off to a shaky start, losing both their openers early in the innings. Experienced campaigner Ben Duckett walked in at four and tried to resurrect the innings but he lacked support from the other end. He departed on the 45th ball on 25. The Originals got the opening and they took the advantage of it.
The lower-order batters failed to adapt to the conditions as they faltered in the chase. Pretorius tried hard and scored 29 but lacked support from the other end as they eventually bundled out on 102 in 89 balls, losing the game by 47 runs. Sean Abbott was named the player of the match for his excellent figures of 3/8 in his 15 balls, which included 13 dot balls. Tristan Stubbs also picked up two wickets to help his side defend the total.
Manchester Originals register their first win of the Hundred 2022
Manchester Originals were really struggling in this year’s competition. They had played three games and lost all. Their batters struggled against Welsh Fire but the bowlers stepped up and helped them register their first win of the Hundred 2022.
Speaking about his performance, Abbott was quoted, “We would have liked more on the board. We have not executed as a bowling group for the first few games. They bowled well in the back end. We knew it was tough to bat especially with pace off and the pitch spinning.”
“Another big game for us, it’s all big games for us from here. Hopefully we will build nice momentum from this win, to go up against a pretty classy outfit in the next game”, he added.
Welsh Fire continue to languish at the bottom of the points table. They have played four games so far and are yet to win a single game. Nothing has gone right for them and will need to be at their absolute best to grab a win in this year’s competition. Time is running out for them and will have to come out hard in their next game.
