Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has thrown his weight behind Sanju Samson, endorsing the Rajasthan Royals skipper as the next captain for the Indian T20 team. Singh, who was part of India’s World Cup-winning squad in 2011, believes that Samson, with his impressive performance in the ongoing IPL season, deserves a place in the Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.

The 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman played a crucial role in Rajasthan Royals’ convincing 9-wicket win over Mumbai Indians on Monday, contributing 38 runs in the successful chase of 180 runs. While much of the innings was driven by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brilliant century, Samson’s knock was equally important in securing the victory for his team.

Harbhajan Singh took to Twitter to express his support for Samson’s inclusion in the Indian T20 World Cup squad, stating, “Yashasvi Jaiswal’s knock is proof that class is permanent and form is temporary. There shouldn’t be any debate about the wicketkeeper-batsman. Sanju Samson should walk into the Indian team for the T20 World Cup and also be groomed as the next T20 captain for India after Rohit. Any doubts?”

Samson, who was appointed captain of the Rajasthan Royals in 2021, has led the team admirably, taking them to only their second IPL final in 2022. With a formidable record as an IPL captain, having won 29 out of the 53 matches he has led Rajasthan Royals, Samson has proved his leadership abilities on the field.

The ongoing IPL season is crucial for many Indian players vying for a spot in the T20 World Cup squad, with names like Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Sanju Samson in contention for the specialist wicketkeeper-batsman position.

As speculation mounts over the composition of India’s T20 World Cup squad, Harbhajan Singh’s endorsement adds weight to Sanju Samson’s claim for a spot in the team and even the captaincy mantle in the T20 format post Rohit Sharma’s retirement. With consistent performances and strong leadership skills, Samson could be the answer to India’s search for a new T20 captaincy figure.
