The Mumbai Indians faced their fifth defeat in the IPL 2024 T20 cricket series as they were convincingly beaten by Rajasthan Royals by 9 wickets in the 38th match of the league on April 22. Despite Nehal Vadara 49 runs and Tilak Varma 65 runs, Mumbai could only manage to post a total of 179/9 in their innings at Jaipur. Sandeep Sharma starred with the ball for Rajasthan, taking a fifer.

In response, Rajasthan Royals chased down the target of 180 runs comfortably in 18.4 overs with Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring a brilliant unbeaten century. Jaiswal’s innings included 9 fours and 7 sixes, as he finished with 104* off just 60 deliveries. Jos Buttler contributed 35 runs, while skipper Sanju Samson remained unbeaten on 38* to guide Rajasthan to victory.

After the match, Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya was asked about the reason for the defeat. Pandya, however, refrained from criticizing his team and opted for a positive outlook, stating that they would learn from the defeat and come back stronger in the next match.

This approach of Pandya drew criticism from former South African cricketer Dale Steyn, who indirectly criticized Pandya for his leadership skills. Steyn pointed out that Pandya’s attitude, where he only verbally encourages his team and tries to maintain a positive facade after defeats, does not help Mumbai Indians in any significant way.

Steyn expressed his disappointment with Pandya’s approach, stating that the Mumbai Indians need a captain who can make a difference on the field, not someone who laughs and makes excuses after defeats.

In a cryptic tweet, Pandya responded to the criticism, saying, “I look forward to the day when players can honestly say what’s on their minds.”

With another defeat under Pandya leadership, Mumbai Indians find themselves in a precarious position in the IPL 2024. They will need to win their next few matches to secure a spot in the playoffs, and much will depend on Pandya’s leadership and the team’s performance in the upcoming matches.
